Isuzu Philippines Corporation (IPC) once again pushed the limits of its legendary pick-up truck as it staged the Isuzu D-MAX 4×4 Media Challenge held from November 18 to 20, 2025, at the iconic Laoag Sand Dunes.
The event provided members of the motoring media an exhilarating opportunity to experience firsthand the superior off-road capability, rugged engineering, and intelligent features that make the Isuzu D-MAX one of the most trusted pickup trucks on and off the road.

The three-day activity began with a scenic drive through Ilocos Norte’s picturesque roads and tourist landmarks, giving participants a glimpse of both cultural heritage and the D-MAX’s driving comfort on paved highways. The convoy then proceeded to the Laoag Sand Dunes, where Isuzu transformed the area into a full off-road course and desert camp, setting the stage for a series of challenges designed to test both man and machine.

“The Isuzu D-MAX simply won’t back down from any challenge. This drive demonstrates how the D-MAX’s exceptional engineering and robust design allow it to take on the toughest terrains with confidence. Whether it’s a long highway stretch or the unpredictable dunes of Laoag, the D-MAX proves that you can always drive with peace of mind, no matter what lies ahead,” said IPC Executive Vice President Yasuhiko Oyama.

Upon arrival, participants were given a 4×4 driving tutorial and safety briefing conducted by IPC’s technical instructors before heading straight into the sand course. The terrain proved challenging—with steep inclines, soft sand patches, and sharp slopes—but the D-MAX handled each section with remarkable stability and control.
On the second day, four teams of motoring media participated in the D-MAX 4×4 Challenge, combining technical driving tests, adventure checkpoints, and skill-based contests. The route included stops at key landmarks in Malacanang of the North and Paoay Church, before proceeding to a “pasalubong challenge” in the city proper that tested the participants’ time management and negotiation skills. These activities highlighted the versatility of the D-MAX – from smooth road comfort to technical off-road capability.

The event climaxed with a 5-kilometer time trial sand course, designed as the ultimate test of endurance, driving skill, and machine capability. Set against the breathtaking landscape of the Laoag Sand Dunes, the final challenge demanded every ounce of power, traction, and control from both driver and vehicle. Each team took turns navigating the specially designed track filled with steep ascents, sudden drops, deep ruts, and shifting sands—conditions that could easily unsettle lesser vehicles.
More than a display of speed, the 4×4 sand dunes challenge became a test of confidence behind the wheel – a demonstration that with the Isuzu D-MAX, even the most challenging terrain can turn into an exhilarating driving experience
“This kind of terrain is no match for the Isuzu D-MAX. When paired with skilled driving, the combination of power, precision, and technology makes every obstacle feel like a breeze. It’s the kind of performance that gives confidence to every driver, no matter the terrain,” Oyama added.
D-MAX Rebranding: From Utility to Lifestyle
The 4×4 Media Challenge also forms part of IPC’s D-MAX Rebranding Campaign in the Philippines—an ongoing effort to broaden the D-MAX’s appeal among younger and lifestyle-oriented customers. Through this initiative, IPC aims to showcase the D-MAX not just as a dependable workhorse, but as a versatile lifestyle vehicle built for people who seek adventure, travel, and freedom on and off the road.
This Laoag activity perfectly captured that spirit—proving that the Isuzu D-MAX can be both a rugged off-roader and a stylish companion for everyday drives. Whether it’s navigating city streets during the week or heading off for outdoor escapes on weekends, the D-MAX offers the perfect balance of toughness, comfort, and modern technology.
“The Isuzu D-MAX is known worldwide for its exceptional durability—and because of that, it’s also trusted for adventures like this. Across the globe, the D-MAX is driven through the Australian outback, muddy jungles, and sandy coastlines. That’s the kind of adventurous lifestyle we want to bring here in the Philippines—to let more people experience how capable and exciting the new D-MAX truly is,” Oyama shared.
Engineered for Unstoppable Performance
At the heart of the Isuzu D-MAX is the 4JJ3-TCX 3.0-liter Blue Power diesel engine, producing 190 PS and 450 Nm of torque—providing exceptional pulling power and immediate throttle response even under heavy load or deep sand conditions. Its high-pressure common-rail fuel injection system ensures optimal combustion and fuel efficiency, making it as economical as it is powerful.
Complementing the engine’s muscle is the 6-speed automatic transmission with sequential shift that allows smooth gear changes and better control across varying conditions. The Terrain Command Dial, conveniently located on the center console, enables the driver to easily switch between 2H (2-wheel drive high), 4H (4-wheel drive high), and 4L (4-wheel drive low) modes on the fly, perfect for transitioning from city drives to challenging off-road paths like sand dunes or rocky trails.
In extreme terrain, the D-MAX’s Rear Differential Lock (Diff Lock) further enhances traction by ensuring both rear wheels rotate at the same speed, allowing the vehicle to power through loose surfaces such as sand or mud without getting stuck. The Rough Terrain Mode, meanwhile, automatically adjusts throttle response and braking force to optimize grip and stability, giving the driver added control even in unpredictable ground conditions.
Advanced Technology and Safety
Beyond power and toughness, the Isuzu D-MAX stands out for its comprehensive suite of intelligent safety and driver-assist features. The Advanced Driver Assist System (ADAS) utilizes a state-of-the-art two-eye stereo camera system to provide a range of safety functions, including Adaptive Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Warning, Lane Departure Warning, and Turn Assist—ensuring that every journey is not just powerful, but safe and secure.
Other advanced features include Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control, and Electronic Stability Control, all of which contributed to the vehicle’s commanding performance throughout the event. Inside, participants enjoyed the D-MAX’s premium comfort, ergonomic seating, and intuitive infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, proving that off-road adventure need not come at the expense of comfort and connectivity.
Ready for Every Journey, On Any Terrain
“We are very confident with the Isuzu D-MAX, and we’re never afraid to put it through grueling challenges like this. This event showcases its true potential and demonstrates that not all pickup trucks are built the same. The D-MAX stands above with its proven durability, intelligent technology, and performance engineered for the real world,” Oyama added.
From the sand dunes of Laoag to the busy streets of the city, the Isuzu D-MAX is built for those who live life on the go. Whether it’s weekday drives, road trips with family, or off-road adventures on weekends, the D-MAX is a reliable companion that can keep up with your pace and passion. It’s a vehicle that adapts to your lifestyle—ready to take you wherever your next adventure leads, with confidence, comfort, and the assurance of Isuzu’s legendary durability.
